Last Day of Competition Sees Top Action and Celebrities

Today was the sixth and final day of the 2014 Special Olympics European Summer Games sports competitions. Her Majesty Queen Mathilde, soccer legend Christian Karembeu and former Red Devils star Mbo Mpenza all attended to watch sports action and present medals to athletes in Den Uyt (Mol) and de Rooi (Berchem).

Friday 19 September, 2014 — Today was the sixth and final day of the 2014 Special Olympics European Summer Games sports competitions. Her Majesty Queen Mathilde, soccer legend Christian Karembeu and former Red Devils star Mbo Mpenza all attended to watch sports action and present medals to athletes in Den Uyt (Mol) and de Rooi (Berchem).

The basketball Unified finals started with the female final Belgian Team 1 versus Belgian team 2. Team 1 were victorious with a score of 27-7 points and took Gold.  In the men’s finals, four teams  Finland, Azerbaijan, Russia and Belarus came out on top taking home gold for their countries.

Mbo Mpenza, former Red Devils star kicked off the final between Belgium and Malta, with the host Belgium winning 1-0. “We must give back to the athletes what they give to us. They are passionate human beings who love playing sport.  My best friend’s son has an intellectual disability, so you canunderstand that this touches me deeply,” says Mpenza.

Another top star of the soccer world attended the Games to watch great sporting action and to present medals – former French international player Christian Karembeu. “Special Olympics is very close to my heart. I have enjoyed supporting athletes and their achievements for many years and I am honoured to be here today.  The athletes’ love of the game of football is fantastic,” said Karembeu

Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of Belgium attended the Games to watch gymnastics and athletics and to spend time with athletes.  After declaring the Games open last Saturday Her Majesty was determined to return to meet the athletes and see them on the sports field.
