The British School of Brussels (BSB) first became involved with the Special Olympics Belgium (SOB) when a team of its students designed, organised and ran part of the entertainment programme for the 2010 Belgium National Special Olympics.
Since then BSB signed a charter with the Special Olympics Belgium to consolidate this very special commitment. The charter helps us to underline the importance of collaboration; supporting the integration of people with intellectual disabilities.
BSB is actively involved in enhancing social integration and reaffirming the acceptance of people with disabilities and does so by offering the opportunity for some Belgian Special Olympians to join BSB athletes and practice sports together using the sports’ facilities at the school. BSB has held a number of sports’ days involving the Belgian Special Olympians.
We also encourage our students to organise themselves as voluntary workers for a specific project, for example, within the frame work of an event, to share ideas and to include the Special Olympics Belgium organisation.
In April 2012 BSB had the opportunity to view over 400 pieces of art created by people with intellectual disabilities and select pieces for an art Vernissage which was held in May. The Vernissage was attended by the British Ambassador Jonathan Brenton, members of the BSB Board, parents and special guests. We not only sold paintings with the profits going to SOB and the artists, but we also helped to raise awareness.
The Friends of BSB (FoBSB) our parent organisation hold annually a “Summer Ball” in support of the Special Olympics Belgium. BSB raised an astonishing € 14,150 at this Ball in 2013 and aims to raise a further similar amount in 2014 by sponsoring individual athletes.
The British School of Brussels shares the philosophy and the values of solidarity, respect and integration which the Special Olympics Belgium promotes through the games. We shall be supporting the European Summer Games taking place in Antwerp from the 9 to 20 September 2014 and we are actively seeking ways to best support this exciting event.
We are very proud of our association and work with the Special Olympics Belgium!
